Dedicated to Research and Education on the Biology, Ecology, Biodiversity, and Conservation of Fishes

What is the Guy Harvey Research Institute?

Blue Shark The world's marine and freshwater fish resources and diversity are experiencing an unprecedented decline as a result of overfishing, pollution and habitat loss associated with explosive growth in human populations. The United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization estimates that of the world's fish stocks whose status is known, nearly 70% are fully exploited, overexploited or critically depleted. There is, therefore, an urgent need for properly planned conservation and restoration measures for fish resources on a global scale. It is widely acknowledged that to be effective, such measures must be based on high quality scientific information, which is largely lacking for most fish resources.

The Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI) is a scientific research organization formed as a collaboration between Dr. Guy Harvey and the Oceanographic Center of Nova Southeastern University. GHRI has been established to assume a leadership role in providing the scientific information necessary for effective conservation and restoration of fish resources and biodiversity from a local to global scale.

The Mission of the Guy Harvey Research Institute

Trigger The mission of the Guy Harvey Research Institute is to conduct high quality, solution-oriented, basic and applied biological science research needed for effective conservation, restoration, enhancement, biodiversity maintenance and understanding of the world's wild fish resources. GHRI, through Nova Southeastern University, also provides advanced graduate training to US and international students in disciplines related to these conservation goals.

Where is the Guy Harvey Research Institute Located?

GHRI The Guy Harvey Research Institute forms part of Nova Southeastern University's Oceanographic Center campus, located at the entrance of Port Everglades on a ten-acre waterfront site in Dania Beach, Florida. The Institute's proximity to coral reefs, popular fishing grounds and the open ocean makes it ideally suited for marine research activities.

Who Supports the Conservation Activities of the Guy Harvey Research Institute?

The scientific research and education programs of the Guy Harvey Research Institute are supported by Guy Harvey Incorporated, Nova Southeastern University, Grouper and private citizens and organizations concerned about the deteriorating state of the world's oceans.
